W. H. Parker, PE
Harold Parker is a Structural Engineer with extensive experience in the drilling equipment industry since 1955.
He has been licensed as a Professional Engineer in Texas since 1971, and for many years managed
engineering groups specializing in product design and development, manufacturing and field service of oil well
drilling rigs and earth boring equipment.
Prior to forming Derrick Engineering Company in 1981, he served as Chief Engineer for Structures and
Systems Engineering Company and Derrick Service International. During the five years that he was Chief
Engineer of DSI, he directed the activities of the engineering department and supervised the development of
the product line of drilling equipment, including derricks, masts, substructures and trailer mounted drilling rigs.
Mr. Parker was employed by Lee C. Moore Corporation of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1955 after studying engineering
at the University of Tulsa and Oklahoma A&M College (Oklahoma State University). During the nine years at
Lee C. Moore, he served as a field engineer, responsible for engineering, sales, service, rig-up, field
modifications, investigations and field repair of damaged structures. His field assignments included the areas
of West Texas, the Rocky Mountains and the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. He also served the engineering
department in Tulsa, Oklahoma participating in the design of masts, derricks and substructures for land-based
and offshore applications, crown blocks, racking platforms, pipe handling systems, trailers, suspensions,
cranes and microwave relay towers.
Mr. Parker joined Hugh B. Williams Manufacturing Company, a Division of the Hughes Tool Company, in
August, 1964. He designed the structures for the "Betty I", the first laser guided tunneling machine and U. S.
Patent #3,345,108 was issued as the co-inventor for this unique design. During the eleven years at Hughes, he
was responsible for the design and manufacture of many other products, including earth boring machines, shaft
drilling rigs and big-hole drilling tools.
The big-hole tool product line included the design and production engineering for large swivels, kellys, drill
strings, drill collars, stabilizers, casing elevators, crossover subs and many other tools utilized in drilling large
diameter holes in the earth with sizes up to twenty-five feet in diameter.
Mr. Parker has extensive experience in computer design and stress
analysis, field engineering, field service, field repairs and the
investigation of failures and accidents on drilling equipment of all
types. He has assisted many attorneys and law firms with their
investigations while serving as an expert witness in depositions and
court trials. He has been an active member of the American Petroleum
Institute's Task groups governing the Specifications for Drilling and
Well Servicing Structures, API Specification 4F and 4G, since 1981. He
has also been a member of NSPE, TSPE, ASME, SPE and AWS.
